We have travelled with thomsons and travelled on the island star last year and we found the informal dining room chaotic and very crowded so we tended to pay extra and eat in their speciality restaurants then later in the year we travelled on a Royal Caribbean and what a difference I think the entertainment on Thomsons has the edge but as for somewhere to eat casual or formal, Royal Carribean won hands down so I'm sure you will have a wonderful time Have a great honeymoon cruise We have just celebrated our 40th anniversary on a cruise to the Baltic on Carnival

We were booked on the Island Star next June with a balcony cabin and were given the option of a Thomson cruise without a balcony (exactly the same as you). To this day we have never received any correspondence from Island Cruises which I find disappointing. We have now booked a similar cruise with Royal Caribbean which has cost considerably more but we have been told that it is a far superior ship and it should be worth the money - fingers crossed. I know the Island Star was a bit down market compared to some of the cruise ships but I liked the fact that it was so casual. I hope you get your honeymoon sorted.

Thank you for your reply. Like yourselves we have also now re-booked with Royal Caribbean on Brilliance of the Seas, at additional cost. We were very disappointed at the attitude of Island/Thomson who were even unprepared to give us the early booking offers afforded to Thomsons customers who booked with them before July (we booked with Island in April) for example the free all inclusive which they wanted to charge us an additional £600 for!!! We just wondered if anyone had actually been offered any recompense for the loss of balcony etc? We are now looking forward to our honeymoon on a much better ship even though it is costing more than we can really afford.

Although I recently travelled with Island and enjoyed it, I would recommend you opt for a different ship for your honeymoon and for something a little more special.

Look upon this as an opportunity. There are much better cruise lines out there especially if you are on honeymoon. As the Downs say - there are bargains out there now, grab one of those instead of thompsons. Use the berlitz guide on this site to research the ships when you find a bargain on the dates you want - good luck. (or go to a specialist cruise agent that is independant i.e not thomas cook, etc.)

This is really tough luck at a time when you want things to run smoothly. You haven't said whether the moment has passed or if it is still to come. If it is in the future I would suggest that you look at all the bargains that are around currently and I'm sure you will be able to upgrade for the same cost. Good luck anyway. ....Neil
