We loved Ajaccio. No excursion, just walked round the town and had a delicious lunch of freshly caught fish on one of the floating restaurants (a series of small linked boats off the jetty) Lovely little town with nice shops and very friendly considering it's part of France! Most spoke English and loved us trying our school level French, but then half the fun is conversing in part French, part English and all having a good laugh at the mistakes. Having read of a Napoleon Museum we decided to visit it. Firstly it took ages to find - the entrance is an inconspicuous side door in a Municipal Building just off the "front". Secondly, there is a long flight of ornate marble steps up to it (I have mobility problems) Thirdly, there isn't much to see when you get there. Just 2 rooms, each the size of our front room at home. The first room is just a load of portraits hung on the walls. We hadn't a clue who they all were. Then into the second room where there were just glass cases full of medals and coins with Napoleon's face on the reverse. And that's all folks! Nothing else nor any explanations or information for any of these portraits or metal goods. However, we were glad we'd gone because otherwise we'd have spent the rest of the cruise thinking we'd missed the opportunity to see something interesting.......................

we loved both these places. We took the train along the coast from Ajaccio whic hwas for around 1.5 hours along the coast and was lovely. Went back to the glorious beach for my son to swim and then meandered back to the ship which wasnt berted too far away. A tender boat took us from the ship into Alghero which we found to be friendly, pretty and with some interesting shops. Again there was a nice beach for my son. There are boat trips from the harbour to see the caves so you dont have to do the ship excursion which is more expensive. As stated we loved these two ports so enjoy , wish we were going again!

Hi - both absolutely wonderful ports of call. We didn't take organised trips, because you dock right in the town, and it was not necessary if you like to wandeer on your own. We were on Island Star in June - and rated both these islands our best days of all. Take the bus tour from the port in Ajjacio - it's a super trip up the coast and back - some wonderful views and some unusual sights. The town itself is very friendly. As for Alghero - we took the horse drawn and the little train tour - (travelling with a disabled who could not get off here - we made two different trips) It's a beautiful town, and walking around the old town walls gave wonderful views. We would have liked to take the bus tour, but didn't have time. We'd love to repeat the visits!

Ajaccio is the capital town of Corsica and the birthplace of Napoleon, so there are lots of statues, museums etc. It is normally reached by tender and you land virtuaklly in the town centre. It's a relatively small town and easily walkable, but there is a tourist "train" which will take you on a tour of the town. Pleasant and interesting as Ajaccio is, Corsica is one port of call where you should try and take a tour. The Prunelli Gorges and Les Calanches are well worth visiting, but not the tortoise sanctary, unless you've a particular fondness for these creatures.
