Cruise Reviews

Our least favourite cruise but we still enjoyed it

Destination: Mediterranean Age: 36-45
We sailed on the Island Star on the 26th of July 08 for a weeks med cruise. This was our 5th cruise and to be honest the least enjoyable. To be fair we booked last minute and just wanted to sunbath and relax for a week and Island Star met our needs. However we found it to be very basic and not up to the standards of our previous cruises on Ocean Village to the Caribbean, Sea Princess to the Med and Diamond Princess to Hawaii. Island Star is in real need of a total upgrade our cabin was clean but tatty and very old fashioned. We found the food to be good but again didnt compare to Ocean Village and certainly not to Princess however we didnt pay as much so I suppose its a case of you get what you pay for. Our main concern was the kids club which was very poor. On the Diamond Princess the kids club was fantastic and our children aged 8 and 14 loved every minute. It was open 3 times a day for 3 hour each session you never had to pre-book and if you wanted to go ashore without the children the kids club looked after them free of charge and even took them to lunch. On Island Star the kids club did activities for an hour a couple of times a day and you had to pre-book and wouldnt look after children who's parents had gone ashore. All in all we did enjoy our week on Island Star but wouldnt return as Ocean Village offers higher quality informal cruising and we have found that we enjoy the quality that formal cruising offers to its passengers. On a last note the Captain JC was fantastic and really got involved with his passengers.
Quality of Food2
Good basic food we ate in the Steak house twice and this was excellent and made me feel like I was on a cruise
Entertainment2
Spent most of our time sitting up on deck with a bottle of wine at night
Shore Excursionsn/a
Didnt do any
Staff4
The Captain JC he was fantastic got really involved with the passengers and made sure they were enjoying themselves
Children's Facilities1
Very disappointed with the kids club, very short sessions had to pre-book and didnt provide the opportunity for parents to go ashore without the children
Onboard Activities2
Only 2 pools which got very very busy
Cabins2
Very clean and spacious but tatty and old fashioned also towels were not white and fluffy as on other cruises
Overall Rating2

Hi My little boy goes to kids club because he wants to have fun with kids his own age. If he didnt want to go then we certainly wouldnt make him. Infact when we went to Hawaii I encouraged him not to go as its not every day you get to see volcanoes and swim with dolphins which he loved. However sometimes he didnt want to come off the ship and at least Princess offer the opportunity to go ashore whilst your children are looked after and kept safe. This review was meant to be about my experience of the Island Star. I mentioned that we were unhappy with the kids club the we included my little boy as he wanted to be able to go and play with his new friends and not have to come off the ship if he didnt want to. However my comments seem to have been taken out of context.

Hello people of Wigan . It seems a shame that you gave such a poor review ratings basically due to the Kids Club not being the same as other ships. Im NOT surprised you couldnt leave them and go ashore on your own but thats the rule. You maybe should "check it out with the cruise firm before cruising if its SO important. By the way, I have seen lots of reviews about Ocean Village One, needing to be upgraded as its tatty. But for Entertainment staff and value Island Star seems to win every time. I have been on Ocean village three times and also Island escape and they all have good and bad points and I feel as though your review is harsh. Everyone to their own opinions as they say. Island Star is fully booked in September and that says it all.

Hi, We've just returned today from the Island Star and on the whole we had a good time, however it was more to do with the people that we met and the adventures that we had as independent travellers shoreside. I think that the comments from the reviewer are valid. We've never been on a cruise before and as a result of the Island Star its unlikely that we ever will again ....I'm sure that Byrne you will not agree with our review when submitted...hey ho each to their own.

Hello Mr or Mrs Hope-Starr, please dont let the Island Star put you of the cruising experience. Try another cruise line, we love Princess Cruises and have had 2 fantastic cruises with them. As you say it is each to their own but it would seem that your not allowed to express purely what are you own opinions without being subjected to scarcastic responses. Im sure lots of people thoroughly enjoy the Island Star but for us it wasnt a patch on our previous cruises. Once again dont be put off by Island Star try another cruise line.

Hi Mellings, Yes you are right that everyones entitles to opinions and have a right to comment on reviews. Thanks for tipping everyone off that fee paying passengers on Princess Cruises are sponsoring child care. I have been on Princess, Ocean Village, NCL, Thomson, and MSC Italian Cruise and it surprises me if its policy on some ships to leave kids on board (even inkids clubs) while parents go ashore. No wonder you get so many complaints about kids running riot and spoiling other peoples cruises.

I left my child in kids club on one occasion whilst going into Maui, he wanted to stay on board with his friends to have fun. YES children are also allowed to have fun on holiday. That being said I do not allow my children to run about unattended on any cruise ship. I take him to kids club and pick him up the rest of the time he is under my watchful eye. I have never allowed my children to spoil anyone else's holiday, I am only too aware how hard people work for their holidays and everyone including children have the right to enjoy them. I paid for my princess cruises and therefore I paid for the childcare that came with it. If you are so anti about paying for other children to be looked after on the odd occasion that thier parents go ashore then I suggest that you complain to Princess about their policy. Or better still go on ships that dont allow children.
