I've just returned from a week on the Island Star followed by a weeks hotel stay. I went with my husband and 12 year old son. We had never been on a cruise before and were rather apprehensive about it - hence the cruise and stay combination. We all had a wonderful time and were sorry we hadnt booked the cruise for 14 days. We had an outside cabin on the 5th deck. The cabin was perfectly adequate although we spent very little time in it. The cabin was kept spotlessly clean by Nina who alos made towel sculptures for us. The food was brilliant with an excellent choice. The only problem was resisting the temptation to eat too much. My son went to the activities run for the teen club and really enjoyed them. We hardly saw him!
We only went on one excursion and preferred to spend our time wandering round the ports we docked in.
All the staff were extremely friendly and hard working.
There was so much to do on the ship and you could do as little or as much as you liked. I particularly enjoyed the Jongleur comedy nights.
We enjoyed everything about the week and will certainly go on another Island cruise.
Quality of Food
The food was really good with a wide choice. We tended to eat breakfast and lunch in the outdoor Beachcomber restaurant but have dinner in the Island restaurant. The waiters were friendly and entertained my son with magic tricks.
Entertainment
I enjoyed the Jongleur comedy shows.
There was constant entertainment but most of the time that I was on the boat I preferred to relax on the sundeck.
Shore Excursions
We only went on the 'Monumental Rome' excursion. We did enjoy this but really prefer to wander around on our own.
Staff
All the staff were friendly and helpful - nothing seemed too much trouble for them. The captain JC was highly visible and approachable and his announcements were very entertaining.
Children's Facilities
My son attended the teen club and really enjoyed the activities and made many friends. He didn't want to leave.
Onboard Activities
There were activities to suit everyone. You could do as much or as little as you wanted.
The daily 'newspaper' kept you informed of all events.
Cabins
Yes - I was surprised how large it was. It contained everything we needed. Cabin service was excellent. The decor is a bit dated but it certaily didn;t bother us.
